Wits b Education, While teachers may not always know just how much difference they make, the legacy they build is seen in the success of the children they teach. There is always high demand for quality teachers who are knowledgeable, skilled, who love learning and who can empower the lives of thousands of children.

The Bachelor of Education (BEd) offered by the Wits School of Education is an internationally-recognised degree that qualifies you to teach in any school in South Africa. It also entitles you to register with the South African Council for Educators (SACE).

All lectures are held on the Wits Education Campus, Parktown Johannesburg. The Wits Bachelor of Education can be studied full-time over 4 years, or part-time (attending evening classes) over 6 years through Wits Plus Centre.

Curriculum for the Bachelor of Education

The curriculum study has some core courses that all student teachers study regardless of the phase and subject they will teach. Other courses will depend on which phase and in which subjects you specialize.

COURSESDESCRIPTION
Education I – IVIn the Education courses, students learn both the theories that guide teaching & learning through psychological, sociological and philosophical perspectives. Students learn how these influence teachers’ work in the classroom.
Teaching Experience I –  IVBeginning with observing and analyzing classroom teaching, you will gradually take responsibility for teaching selected lessons under the guidance of a teacher and a university tutor. By final year you will be capable of managing a class and designing lessons and materials.
Content coursesThese courses enable you to develop strong knowledge and skills in the subjects you will teach.
Methodology CoursesYou are introduced to the ways in which teachers work to extend learners’ knowledge and understanding of the subjects they teach. Methodologies include practical knowledge and skills necessary for teaching particular phases/subjects.
Literacies For Primary/Secondary TeachersAll teachers need to develop their own academic literacy and learn how to develop learners’ literacies in their specialist phase.
Elective Enrichment optionsCourses are available that enable you to develop into a well-rounded teacher, who is ICT literate, who can manage multi-lingual classrooms and who can contribute to school life. In the B Ed, you will be required to complete two enrichment courses from:ICT literacy (Compulsory for students who are not familiar with using a word processer, spreadsheets and PowerPoints).A new additional language to Conversational Competence level (compulsory for students who cannot speak a Black South African language)Fun with ChoirPhysical Activity and Sports in schoolsFinancial Planning and EntrepreneurshipSchool-based support

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In 2008 the admission criteria changed in line with the new National Senior Certificate qualification.

Using the Wits Admission Points Score (APS), applicants are eligible for consideration to study the BEd if they achieve a Bachelor’s degree pass for NSC results, and 36 APS points which includes at least 5 APS points  for English Home Language or English First Additional Language (that is, achieves 60% in Grade 12).

 Applicants who matriculated prior to 2008, who qualify for Mature Age exemption, must have passed English HG, and will need to write the National Benchmark Test (NBT). 

Applicants who matriculated prior to 2008 with endorsement must have at least a pass in English HG, and 18 points or higher.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT:

When you apply for a Bachelor of Education, please make sure that you:

  • Put in an application for funding through the National Students Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), if your family income is less than R350 000 per annum.
  • Put in an application for a Funza Lushaka Bursary, which is a very competitive merit bursary for the top achieving students in scarce subjects where provinces face a teacher shortage. A limited amount of bursaries are available, but all students are encouraged to apply. See http://www.funzalushaka.doe.gov.za/

Wits Student Enrolment Centre – the application centre for all prospective students seeking to apply for a place to study the Bachelor of Education degree.

The Student Enrolment Centre (SEnC) deals with any enquiries related to applying to Wits, accommodation, financial aid, sport and other bursaries, career education, curriculum advice and selection test information. We can also help with registration, timetables, syllabi and booklists.

SENC is located on the Ground Floor of Solomon Mahlangu House, Braamfontein Campus, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.
