In a statement released on Tuesday, Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Neil Garrod said: “The University of Zululand Management wishes to state categorically and unequivocally that the institution has nothing to do with this organisation and that any claims of association with the University are fraudulent.”

Exactly how the Varsity Foundation works or who is behind it, is unclear.

However, according to a pamphlet, the organisation is based at the university’s main campus in Kwadlangezwa, about 20 kilometres south of Empangeni.

All calls to the numbers on the pamphlets went to voicemail.

Garrod said that the university had contacted the police’s Crime Intelligence Unit to investigate what he claimed was a scam.

“The University of Zululand views this in a very serious light. It is a distasteful attempt to use the name of the University to dupe desperate students, and parents into parting with their hard-earned cash. The University encourages students not to deposit any monies to this unrecognised Varsity Foundation,” he said.
