There has also been an increasing focus on research capacity development. Presently the Faculty of Engineering is active in the following areas:

  • Water research
  • Renewable energy
  • Wind energy
  • Intelligent control
  • Road safety

The Faculty is working hard to ensure that there is greater research collaboration with industry and other tertiary institutions and organisations.

Another area that the Faculty is focusing on is SMME (small, micro and medium enterprise) development. Through the Department of Science and Technology initiated Technology Stations Programme, the Faculty of Engineering, collaborating with the Faculty of Natural Sciences, has done sterling work in technology transfer to SMMEs manufacturing chemicals.

A snap shot of MUT qualification

Engineering programmes are about the design and production of useful products and services. Engineers convert scientific knowledge into technology and then technology into successful advancement. At MUT we offer the National Diplomas in Chemical, Civil, Surveying, Electrical, Building (Construction Management & Quantity Surveying), and Mechancial Engineering.  We also offer a Bachelor of Technology in Chemical Engineering.

The faculty of Engineering also offers access (bridging programmes) designed to prepare students who could not fulfill all the diploma entrance requirements.

Career opportunities

National Diploma: Chemical Engineering

The course trains students to be technicians qualified to assist a chemical engineer or plant operator in the control, maintenance and functioning of processes involved in the production of chemicals. The technician’s duties include research, economic evaluation and unit operations.

National Diploma: Civil Engineering

The course qualifies the technician for employment with civil engineering contractors, consultants, Government departments or municipalities, where he/she would form part of a team usually managed by a professional engineer or technologist. The techniciancould be involved in the design and construction of civil engineering structures such as roads, bridges, dams, railways, harbours, buildings and airports.

National Diploma: Surveying

Scaled base maps are essential to any construction planning or development of land. The course qualifies the student as a surveyor who has the ability to prepare maps of various scales set out for the required structures, transportation routes, industrial and residential properties.

National Diploma: Construction Management & Quantity Surveying (Building)

After completing the course students specialise in either construction management or quantity surveying. The course provides essential skills and knowledge needed in the construction of housing, schools, community facilities and other building projects.

National Diploma: Electrical Engineering

The course equips the students with the knowledge and skills needed for working in electrical power generation and distribution environments, process control environments and electronic communication environments. The course may include design, development and work on computer-based systems.

National Diploma:  Mechanical Engineering

The diploma qualifies students for a wide range of occupations. There are employment opportunities in the manufacturing industry, motor industry, ship building industry, aircraft industry, at power stations and on the mines.

Faculty of Natural Sciences

The Faculty of Natural Sciences is one of the three faculties at MUT and is made up of eight departments in the various disciplines of the natural sciences. The faculty is located on a separate campus alongside the MUT main campus. The faculty is a progressive and growing one that offers qualifications that are career oriented in the fields of;

  • Agriculture
  • Biomedical Science
  • Chemistry
  • Community Extension
  • Environmental Health
  • Information & Communication Technology
  • Mathematical Sciences and
  • Nature Conservation

The faculty is a pioneer in the fields of Nature Conservation and Environmental. It was the first, amongst other Universities of Technology, to offer the Advanced Diploma in Nature Conservation and a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health. From 2017 the faculty will offer a Master’s programme in Nature Conservation, a first for a University of Technology in South Africa.

The faculty is home to a growing number of academics who are engaged in research and innovations. Its key features are the science laboratories that are fitted with the latest versions of laboratory equipment that are key in the delivery of relevant teaching and learning programmes.

With a steadily growing number of PhD qualified lecturing staff, the faculty is demonstrating its leadership role by being in the forefront of research in the University, as borne out by the research output. The faculty has developed interventions and partnerships that have helped grow the number of students enrolled in various diploma programmes and improved the quality and competiveness of its students. The faculty also boasts the largest number of academics that won the Teaching Excellence Awards in 2016.

Faculty of Management Sciences

The Faculty of Management Sciences is a diverse, dynamic sector of the campus and home to the Departments of Accounting, Communication, Economics, Human Resource Management, Law, Marketing, Office Technology and Public Management. Our current focus is to prioritise our role and identity as academics, with academic pursuits. This includes a drive to develop research capacity, to establish niche areas for research and to publish. Taking a more proactive role to develop teaching and learning methodologies that are not transmissive but transformative, is central to meeting the requirements of new policy directives (such as OBE).

We are also doing our best to streamline the administrative functions that are so important to our work, and to enhance our channels of communication both within and outside the faculty. Our goal is to develop a strong Faculty profile and identity, which will take us into a new era in higher education. Graduation 2008 was certainly a highlight for our students and we salute them and the mentors who saw them through their course of study, often against tremendous odds.

Various initiatives by departments (speaker forums, advisory committees, scholarship programmes and awards days) are featuring more prominently in the Faculty and eliciting positive participation from the university community.

Ongoing networking with regional and national structures in education and industry to shape curriculum, secure funding, explore ways to enact policy (Recognition of Prior Learning, Co-operative Education and Quality Assurance) and establish linkages, are essential for the Faculty’s growth and development. The Faculty is proud of the achievements of both staff and students.
