Unizulu Accommodation

Unizulu Accommodation, Student residences are a home-away-from-home where an environment conducive to learning is cultivated. Residences aim to create a healthy learning environment where students from diverse backgrounds can co-exist and enjoy basic rights.

Important notes
  • Accommodation in the university residences is not a right but a privilege;
  • Each student will sign a declaration that will bind him/her to the rules of the residences;
  • Residents are financially responsible for payment of a full term’s occupation irrespective of the date of occupation;
  • A resident is supposed to occupy the room that he/she is allocated failing which the room will be given to another deserving student.
Cancellation of accommodation
  • All cancellation of accommodation must be in writing and delivered to the respective warden;
  • Retrospective cancellation of accommodation is discouraged.
Visitors
  • Non-residents are not allowed inside the residences;
  • Residents must seek permission from residences and/or security personnel if they have visitors;
  • Resident found assisting non-residents to gain entrance into the residences will be charged accordingly;
  • Damage to the university property is a serious offence;
  • Resident/s are warned against engaging in vandalism as he/she shall be responsible for all repair or replacement costs;
  • Residents must report breakages to the house committee member or sub-warden;

Alcohol and drugs
  • Residents are warned that it is a serious offence to indulge in or be found in possession of drugs and/or illegal substances;
  • Consumption of alcohol in the corridors, rooms and public places is strictly prohibited;
  • Residents found in possession and/or dealing or indulging in drugs or illegal substances will be suspended from the residences.
Fire arms
  • Firearms must be handed in at the Protective Service Department (PSD) for safe-keeping;
  • No fire-arm and/or dangerous weapon shall be carried or displayed within the premises of the university including residences;
  • Any fire-arm and/or dangerous weapons found will be confiscated and kept at the PSD strong-room for a period not less than six months;
Subletting/squatting
  • Subletting/squatting is strictly prohibited;
  • Any non-resident found in the residences will be regarded as a squatter and will be subjected to disciplinary action;
  • Any resident harbouring a squatter will be subjected to a fine of R500 payable within 30 days, failing which the offender will be suspended from the residences;
  • If a resident is found harbouring a squatter for the second time, he/she will be suspended from the residences. A disciplinary hearing may only follow after the suspension from the residence.
Compulsory quiet time

Residents are advised that making noise disturbs other students at any time of the day. However, the compulsory quiet time is from 19h00-7h00.

Behaviour
  • Good, principled behaviour is encouraged in residents;
  • The use of vulgar language in the residences and university premises is prohibited and offenders will be dealt with accordingly.
Conflict resolution
  • Residents are to report their respective challenges with (in with regards to residence) to their house committee representatives and the latter must try to solve the reported problem;
  • If the problem persists, then the intervention of the Sub-Warden will be sought;
  • It is only after the Sub-Warden has failed to resolve the problem that help shall be sought from the Warden.
Private property

It is the responsibility of the students to keep their personal possessions safe.

Bookings

All bookings for venues in the residences, excluding Lecture Halls 3 & 4, are to be made five workings days in advance. Forms are obtainable from the SSD offices. No meeting or event will be allowed without the formal booking.

RESIDENCE PLACEMENT POLICY

A. Points of departure

  1. Residence accommodation should be managed as a strategic asset in ensuring an atmosphere of a conducive and healthy study environment.
  2. A primary requirement in pursuit of this objective is the establishment of a positive learning environment in each of the residences.
  3. Residences should ensure that students are provided with more than adequate chances of successful study, and that their studies aremeaningfully improved by provided with residence accommodation. To this end, preference in the placement of students in the residences will take into account a student’s social behaviour and academic performance.
  4. Excellency and Diversity, which should not be mutually exclusive, shall also enjoy priority consideration in the allocation of residence accommodation.
  5. According to the principle of equal opportunity, every applicant who meets the admission requirements of UNIZULU should have a chance to obtain residence accommodation.

B. Strategies

  1. Preference categories: identify those students exposed to greater academic and social risks than others and give them preference in the allocation and retention of residence accommodation.
  2. Create or retain categories of residence accommodation which are of strategic advantage to the University.
  3. Manage the steady growth of the preference categories according to demand and the successfulness of the categories.
