Prof Mthembu has extensive experience in the higher education sector; previously serving as Vice-Chancellor and Principal at the Central University of Technology for 10 years. He has also served as Campus Principal, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-Principal at other universities for approximately 10 years.

Prof Mthembu’s tenure at DUT follows that of Dr John Volmink whose five month acting term as DUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal expired on Friday, 30 September 2016. Prior to that, Professor Ahmed Bawa, now Universities South Africa CEO, served as the University’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal.

“We’d like to welcome Professor Mthembu to the DUT family,” said Alan Khan, Senior Director of Corporate Affairs at the Durban University of Technology. “We look forward to his leadership and we are confident that he will enjoy his stay at the University”, said Khan.
