NURSING SCIENCE (NQF Level 8)

BTech: (Baccalaureus Technologiae)

To prepare and develop nurse practitioners (graduate nurse and midwife ) equipped with the knowledge, skills and professional values to meet the health care needs of people of all ages, and thereby contribute to the transformation of society. The graduate nurse practice will reflect an understanding of the social, cultural, and economic context of our country, while conforming to standards of professional nursing practices.
Career Information
The curriculum is designed to prepare graduate nurse- and midwifery practitioners who are equipped to meet the increasing health needs as well as health related problems, of multicultural populations in a wide variety of health care settings, while considering of the current and future social, cultural and economical contexts, of the country.
Career Opportunities
After completion of the 2 years ECP, the learner nurse will proceed to the 2nd year mainstream studies of the B Tech Degree. Completion of the B Tech Degree provide access to post-basic (post-graduate) qualifications offered at Universities in the field or where appropriate cognate fields as Nursing Education, Nursing management; Primary Health Care; Occupational Health Care. There are various career opportunities in the Private and Public Health Care sector.

Career Advantage
The degree entails the education and training of a nurse (general, psychiatric and community) and midwife leading to registration (Government Gazette Regulation No. 425 of 22 February 1985 as amended). After completion of the Baccalaureus Technologiae Nursing Science Degree (R425), students would be able to register as a professional nurse with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).Thereafter, they also have to work the compulsory community service year while being reimbursed.

Experiential Learning
Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is linked to the clinical learning outcomes of the programme.
Work integrated learning (WIL) is compulsory. The purpose of creating experiential learning opportunities is to prepare the learner nurse to function effectively and competently in this field of study and to be skilled in ethical decision-making and moral reasoning by the end of the programme. WIL in the graduate programme includes clinical nursing practice activities, Theory and Skills lab activities, as well as placement in healthcare facilities.
WIL (also called experiential learning, work-based learning or co-operative learning) focuses on the application of academic learning in a world-of-work context. The focus of experiential learning is for learner nurses to apply and develop their knowledge and skills in a work place environment. Work place practice and skills development will contribute to improved chances of employability and will assist in developing personal skills.
