Why this course is perfect for you?
The National Credit Act has been passed by parliament in March 2006, to make provision for a Debt Counselling Programme to assist over-indebted consumers. To register as a Debt Counsellor, one is required to undergo Debt Counsellor Training which:

  • Is approved by the NCR, and
  • Complies with all the requirements of the National Credit Act and Regulations.

The purpose of the training is to:

  • Inform learners about the background of debt counselling
  • Train learners to be competent in debt counselling
  • Enable eligible learners to register with the NRC as Debt Counsellors
  • Take learners through the process of debt counselling

How to get in?

Learners must have a:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Minimum of two years working experience in any of the following fields:
    • Consumer protection
    • Legal or Para-legal services
    • Accounting or financial services
    • Educating or training individuals
    • Counselling of individuals
    • General business environment experience

Time you will spend on the course

The programme duration is 10 consecutive days (70 hours) and the tuition is face-to-face. Each Damelin campus has a different tuition schedule. Programmes are offered during the week, in the evenings, or on Saturdays.

Course content and modules

  •  Demonstrate an understanding of how and when a consumer can apply for debt review
  •  Determine whether a consumer is over-indebted
  •  Read and interpret credit bureau reports
  •  Demonstrate an understanding of reckless credit
  •  Restructure debt
  •  Draft a consent order
  •  Monitor consumer payments
  •  Issue a Clearance Certificate
  •  Offer support services and make referrals
  •  Negotiate an agreement or structure a deal in an authentic work situation
  •  Communicate verbally with clients in a financial environment
  •  Acquire skills to compose texts required in the business environment
  •  Behave in a professional manner as required in a business environment
  •  Analyse and explain the impact of an individual’s personal interactive style on his/her relationship with a client
  •  Manage time and work processes in a business environment
  •  Achieve personal effectiveness in a business environment
  •  Understand and explain the legal environment of the industry
  •  Gather and manage information to inform decision making
  •  Manage personal finance
  •  Conduct their debt counsellors’ duties and responsibilities effectively and professionally

On successful completion of the programme, the learner will receive the Damelin Short Programme in Debt Counsellor Training Certificate.
