UKZN Varsity

UKZN Varsity, UKZN men’s and women’s football teams have qualified to participate in the Football Varsity Cup tournament for the first time.
Sports Science student, Ms Kholosa Biyana, who is the Captain of the women’s team is confident the team will perform well at the competition being held at North-West University in Potchefstroom between 20 to 22 September.
According to Biyana, the team recently competed in the University Sports South Africa (USSA) tournament in Port Elizabeth where they performed well. ‘I insist that if we could keep the same mindset and spirit that we had going into that tournament, we could do way better than we expect,’ she said.
Hailing from eNgcobo, a small “dusty” town in the Eastern Cape, Biyana lives by the motto: ‘There is no traffic on the extra mile.’ She said balancing her sports and her studies has ensured she excels on the field and in the classroom.
‘I always make sure no day passes without me not going to the library. I have to always ensure I am ahead with my studying and finish my assignments very early,’ she said.
‘What you put in is what you get out.’ She advised other students who would like to follow in her footsteps. ‘I come from a very supportive family. There’s a bunch of well-groomed siblings who understand my passion for football – two older brothers and one younger sister raised by amazing parents,’ she added.
Having previously played for Banyana Banyana, Biyana says her focus is now on working and training hard to get back into the national team.
