The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering is a leader in offering industrial engineering education and technology and we stand tall amongst Industrial and Systems Engineering Departments at the Universities of Technology in South Africa. This department is the only Engineering Department in the Western Cape that offers ECSA accredited Industrial Engineering technological education and a post diploma Quality practitioner’s degree to the people of this province. Our students come from all over South Africa as well as internationally.
The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering has highly qualified and motivated academics that are committed to research and innovation. The department is internationally recognised, and engages in the highest quality teaching and research, benefiting our students, our Faculty, the Institution, the Western Cape and Southern Africa. Our graduates are popular in finding employment opportunities within the production, commercial and services industries.
Our competitive advantage is that we have the infrastructure to engage in commercially viable industry related research projects. Our academics have the collective knowledge and experience to guide, motivate and direct our students through their undergraduate and post graduate qualifications. We are fully aware of the current industry needs in that we engage with our industry partners on a regular basis. Our staff are therefore encouraged to “sharpen” their skills and knowledge annually to stay abreast with challenging industry demands.
Someone wanting to study Industrial Engineering or Quality should be hard working, innovative and practically orientated. As an Industrial Engineering Technician/Technologist or Quality practitioner, you will need:
- To work as part of a team, and have good social skills.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skill to overcome difficult academic and real-world challenges.
- To be highly IT literate, as much of your work will rely on using computers.
- To be highly motivated to achieve the challenging goals of this profession.
Course Information and Fees
(Phasing OUT – Replaced by Diploma in Industrial Engineering which started in 2018).
Only students who have previously studied this qualification will be allowed to register.ND: (National Diploma)
Purpose and Rationale of the qualification
Graduates obtaining this qualification will be competent in applying operations management techniques and strategies resulting in effectiveness and productivity in industry. The qualified person will be able to register with ECSA.
They undertake investigations and advise management on systems, manufacturing methods, plant layout, materials handling, production control, purchasing and stock control, quality control, work standards and industrial economics.

The ND: Engineering: Industrial is accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). Graduates will comply with the academic requirements for registration as a Professional Technician.

Purpose and Rationale of the qualification
Graduates achieving this qualification will be competent in the leading of programs regarding productivity improvement, integrated manufacturing systems, operating information systems, and those of project and logistics management. The graduates will be able to register with ECSA.
