Teaching and Learning

  • The Teaching and learning enterprise derives from the strategic goals 1-4 of strategic plan 2016-2021.The strategic goal 1 aims to improve governance through enhanced operations to support the academic enterprise and ensure sustainability. The strategic objective 1 of this goal aims to have a broad spectrum of programs characteristic of a comprehensive university.

The University aims to achieve this by establishing new structures to manage the new offerings, to evaluate existing offerings for alignment to the Strategic Plan, and by reviewing the number of learning programs offered. The second priority of the Strategic Plan is to create a quality teaching and learning environment as a comprehensive university, and the sixth priority is to accelerate infrastructure development; both priorities are aimed at improving learning and teaching outcomes by linking pedagogy, spaces and technology.

The learning environment is affected by a combination of general socio-economic factors, such as the living conditions of students as well as institution-specific factors; spaces for teaching and spaces for students to learn, both individually and collaboratively, ICT infrastructure, bandwidth and access, technology-enabled tools and resources, and LIS facilities. There are strong forces compelling us to protect the T&L project from socio-political forces that could not have been easily predicted, and that will also shape in new ways, the plans of the enterprise for the foreseeable futures. The project comprises service delivery, praxis and enhancement.

Service delivery is effected through the faculties and departments, enhancement through the teaching and learning center while praxis is a collaborative effort. Some of the enhancement projects are funded by UNIZULU while others are funded by the new UCDP and related national programs. Scholarship of teaching and learning directs reflection and peer evaluation on praxis.

Value Proposition

ICT is responding to the changing times, while the resilient trends and features respond to long term requirements on the project. Learner-centered education and consequently, the total student experience has now come to the fore; notably the first year experience. There is realization that teaching without learning impact is futile. Is the project developing the learning capability of students to tackle learning challenges and opportunities independently? Learning support systems must foster independent learning and not perpetuate dependence.

Academics must design, implement and evaluate student learning, rather than teaching or lecturing opportunities and challenges. There is great value in engaging students in higher education for teaching and learning innovation and invention; creating space for student led ideas, inventions and innovations. It has been noted that today’s students are natural investigators, researchers and synthesizers of information and that these skills can be put to powerful use.

The impact of the graduate in society has given rise to a focus on graduate attributes with major emphasis on problem solving and further learning analytical capabilities, all underpinned by ethical character and behavior. In addition, there is expectation for contextualizing and integrating into the curriculum, the learning and teaching of work ready professional graduate attributes because.
