National Diploma: Biomedical Technology
Five semester of class attendance at the University, plus one semester applicable in-service training in a laboratory approved for purposes by the HPCSA.
What are the functions of a Medical Laboratory Technologist?
Microscopic, microbiological and chemical examination of specimens from patients to assist the medical practitioner with diagnosis, determination of blood levels of drugs for optimal therapy, tests to determine which antibiotics are the most effective against specific bacteria, tissue sections to determine whether malignancy is present.

Medical Laboratory Technology offers a challenging and exciting career in both the public and private sector. There is a continuous demand for trained Technologist. Job opportunities exist at the following institutions – The National Health Laboratory Services with its main branch in Johannesburg and other branch in most of the large hospitals all over the country, private pathologists with laboratories in various cities and town and forensic laboratories.
Research opportunities are available at both industry and research institutions.

Assessment takes the form of written examinations.
Articulation Options
Students may be able to obtain more credits and obtain the Professional Degree: Medical Laboratory Sciences or do the BTech: Biomedical Technology.

Admission Requirements:
ND: Biomedical Technology
(NB: It is imperative that students wishing to apply for BTech: Biomedical Technology, have an average of 60% for the four main subjects: Cellular Pathology III, Chemical Pathology III, Haematology III and Microbiology III).
Duration:
This a two year part-time course through blended online learning.
Curriculum:
The programme will start off with a block of one to three days on campus in Vanderbijlpark, followed by group and individual assignments which are completed whist working normally.
During this time, students are in regular contact with lecturers and other students through the internet. Lecturers will always be available to guide students’ learning and respond to questions. Online formative assessment will play an important role in preparing students for the final examination, which will be held on campus:
- Laboratory Management (offered via blended online learning)
- Research Methodology & Techniques (offered vial blended online learning)
- Biochemistry/ Research Project
- Integrated Pathophysiology (recognition of prior learning for the board examination and submission of a portfolio may be considered under certain prescribed conditions).
Work Integrated Learning
Training can be done in any of the following categories: Microbiology, Virology, Parasitology, Haematology, Immunology, Blood Transfusion Technology, Chemical Pathology, Pharmacology, Radio-Isotope Technology, Histopathology Techniques, Cytotechnology, Cytogenetics or Forensic Medical Pathology.

A minimum of six months practical training in each of the following categories: Microbiology, Chemical Pathology and Haematology. This combination is collectively known as Clinical Pathology.

Complete 320 hours in a comprehensive local health service clinic / health centre inclusive of-

- Attend a school of health service;
- Visit an occupational health setting;
- Complete a physical health assessment under the guidance of a mentor / preceptors assigned by the VUT in conjunction with the Health Directorate.
