“If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow.” – John Dewey |

The Department of Business management commenced its formal academic activities in 1927 and since evolved into offering diverse and comprehensive components within the broader domain of business management studies. Our value proposition includes education and concomitant research in the integrated sub-fields of:
This department is a high volume undergraduate provider, servicing circa 8000 students per annum in the mentioned fields. Our enhanced post-graduate focus shows huge potential in becoming the leading Southern African academic unit in the broader field of business and management, not only in volume but more so in quality research impact.
Community engagement forms our third component supporting our rich value proposition. We lead the South African entrepreneurship enabling space (within the academic sphere) by offering two levels of business incubation, firstly the UP Business Incubator (UPBI) and secondly the Mamelodi Business Clinic (MBC). The UPBI is a student entrepreneurship development unit inducing and channelling pre-start up idea-to-market, available to all registered students at UP. The MBC is a key role-player in assisting rural and micro entrepreneurs operating the informal sector. Both these entities follow a freemium model with absolutely no cost to potential and nascent entrepreneurs. Our undergraduate students are directly involved via service learning in both these offerings. The department is also a leading service provider to Enterprises and generate substantial additional income to sustain several key academic and support activities.
The Department of Business management endeavours to apply the key principles of innovation management, resulting in a number of market leading technology driven service options, ranging from internal operational efficiency to catalysing enhanced teaching and learning of one of our key stakeholders, the student.
A new operating business model was initiated since May 2017 with some radical and incremental changes as to how a business management department will be managed for the future.
