University Of Witwatersrand Education Faculty, The Wits School of Education (WSoE) offers high-quality teaching and research through thoughtfully developed undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Further to this we offer teacher development in diverse subject areas for in-service teachers. As a student at the WSoE you can expect to be part of a vibrant intellectual and scholarly community. Programme overview

Students may choose one of the following programmes:

  • Foundation Phase Teaching: Grades R–3
  • Intermediate Phase Teaching: Grades 4–7
  • Senior Phase and FET Teaching: Grades 8–12

The BEd degree qualifies you as a teacher for any school in South Africa and entitles you to register with the South African Council for Educators (SACE).
Those who wish to qualify as a teacher in the secondary (high) school level, can also opt for a first degree programme (such as a BA), followed by a one  year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

Curriculum

The curriculum for the BEd has a core of compulsory subjects for all student teachers. Students in all phases will study Education I, II, III and IV. These are the foundational modules in Educational Psychology, Sociology and Philosophy. You will learn about how these are relevant in diverse classroom contexts.
All students in the School of Education are required to take Teaching Experience. Every year you will spend some time in schools where you will work with a supervising teacher and will be mentored and assessed by a tutor from Wits.

Your application

  • You may apply for three programmes (degrees).
  • Applications to Wits must enclose a non-refundable application fee of R100 (for international applicants, R700).

Documentation / Checklist

  • Submit your Grade 11 report which must be signed and stamped by your school principal.
  • If you have already matriculated, attach a copy of your matric certificate.

Course Costs

The average course costs for local students range from R34 000 to R62 000, depending on the course and the number of years of study.
