Honours:

  • A bachelors degree or equivalent.
  • At least an upper second class pass in the final undergraduate course in the subject.

Masters by coursework or research report:

  • A bachelors degree with honours or an appropriate postgraduate diploma.

Doctorate:

  • A masters degree or an equivalent qualification from Wits University or another university.
  • A supervisor from the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management must be identified and approached prior to application.

  • FULL academic transcript(s) for all post-matric studies (including marking key if marks are not expressed as percentages)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Letter of motivation, this letter should address:
    Briefly why you want to do the programme • Whether you have any relevant other qualifications or work experience, especially legal research experience, and if so, the nature thereof • If you have not attained the minimum average for admission (70% for the LLM by Coursework and Research Report) you should explain why not If you are applying for the LLM by Coursework and Research Report and have an average mark of between 65% and 70%, you are strongly advised to provide evidence of your ability to perform legal research and produce writing of a high standard. Such evidence could, for instance, consist of a legal publication or a law essay written by you that received a high mark.

Masters (LLM) by Dissertation
Prospective Research students should, in the first instance, contact the Chair of Postgraduate Studies at the School of Law before making a formal application so that the School can evaluate the students’ research plans, academic qualifications and ascertain the availability of supervision in the chosen topic. The Chair requires the students CV, copies of Degree certificates, academic transcripts and a brief outline in the form of a four- to five- page document containing a descriptive title and a summary of the research to be undertaken and the principal questions to be investigated.
