University Of The Witwatersrand Anthropology, The Department has a small but highly trained and motivated staff of both younger and veteran anthropologists, all deeply engaged in studying important questions facing South African and global society.
Areas of specialization include cultural identity, gender studies, development and business, performance, popular culture and media, cultural theory, local politics and land affairs, labour migration, nationalism and ethnicity, just to name the most visible areas of research.
Members of the department frequently undertake fellowships abroad, publish widely and present their work at conferences and as visiting instructors in countries throughout Europe, North America and Africa. In return, many international scholars and students research and teach within the department every year. The Anthropology Society is a group of enthusiastic students who organize special presentations, films, interactive workshops, and field trips. Many students majoring in other disciplines are active members of the Anthropology Society.

Anthropology

Anthropology is the study of humankind in social and cultural contexts. The first step towards becoming an anthropologist is the three-year BA major, which starts with a general, broad-based introduction to this intriguing field and builds toward more specialised knowledge.

Programme overview

Anthropology is the study of people throughout the world, their evolutionary history, how they behave, adapt to different environments, communicate and socialise with one another.
Anthropologists study the important questions facing South African and global society. Studying anthropology gives us a unique set of skills for working with people. Anthropologists have a deep understanding of cultural and ethnic differences and understand how people’s perspectives, beliefs and practices fit into a wider social, political and economic context.
