University Of Mpumalanga Nature Conservation, The Diploma in Nature Conservation is designed to enhance the supply of graduates with a sound understanding of relevant theory associated with nature conservation and a well-developed ability to apply the theory in practice. The programme includes foundational subjects such as Animal and Plant Science, Soil Science and management courses including Accounting and Human Resource Management; and major subjects including Conservation Ecology, Environmental Management and Resource Management. The third year is a year of work integrated learning during which students will be placed in the industry.
By allowing students to focus on a particular aspect of conservation such as the conservation of birds or endangered flora, our graduates will have a competitive edge over those from other similar programmes.
PROGRAMME CURRICULUM
DURATION:
The Diploma in Nature Conservation is a three-year, 360 credit, exit level 6 qualification.
CURRICULUM:
Year 1 & 2
In the first two years, students are exposed to theoretical and practical topics including Conservation Ecology; Plant and Animal Studies; Environmental Management; Resource Management; Cost and Management Accounting; Human Resource Management Community Based Resource Management; Environmental Education; Fire Ecology and Soil Science.
Year 3
During the third year of study students will commit to a full year of work integrated learning in which they will be placed on a nature conservation establishment. During this time there is the opportunity to apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in a real world setting.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants with the National Senior Certificate:
The minimum requirements for admission to a Diploma must be met. In addition, students will have the following:
Admission Points Score (APS):
– 29 With Mathematics
– 30 With Mathematical Literacy
• English (Home or First Additional Language): Level 4
• Mathematics: Level 2
• Mathematical Literacy: Level 3
• One of Life Sciences or Geography: Level 4
Applicants the NCV level 4:
NCV level 4, in Primary Agriculture with at least 50% for English (Home Language or First Additional Language), 30% for Mathematics or 40% for Mathematical Literacy.
RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL) AND CREDIT ACCUMULATION AND TRANSFER (CAT):
Applicants wishing to be considered for admission in terms of RPL or to have credits transferred to this programme must indicate this on their application. The University policy on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Accumulation and Transfer (CAT) will be applied.
PROGRESSION:
Students who successfully complete this Diploma will be able to apply for admission to an Advanced Diploma in Nature Conservation at UMP or another Higher Education Institution.
