University Of Kwazulu Natal Maritime Studies, The Unit of Maritime Law and Maritime Studies at UKZN’s Howard College campus, is a strategic research and knowledge initiative through its close proximity to the most active general cargo port and the most extensive port-ancillary maritime “Cluster” in the southern hemisphere.
Established in 2012, the Unit is located within the School of Law, one of the largest contact law schools in South Africa. Through its multi-disciplinary approach, strong collaboration with the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance (SAEF) and research interactions with other disciplines at the University, the Unit consolidates an amalgam of diverse and value-adding maritime offerings, making it one of the most unique in South Africa and on the African continent.
Principal areas of teaching excellence at postgraduate level range from maritime law, maritime transport, port economics and customs and excise.
Through leveraging its intellectual assets and its relationships with key stakeholders in the maritime sector, the Unit of Maritime Law and Maritime Studies aspires to be the leading knowledge institute for maritime-related studies on the African continent.
