Department of Emergency Medical Care (EMC) at the University of Johannesburg offers various programmes in the field of emergency care.
We offer a two-year Diploma in Emergency Medical Care, offered at various satellite campuses; a four–year professional Bachelor of Emergency Medical Care, which is offered at the Doornfontein Campus; and a dissertation only Master’s degree in Emergency Medical Care.
Completion of the Diploma in Emergency Medical Care leads to registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a paramedic, and the completion of the Bachelor in Emergency Medical Care leads to registration as an Emergency Care Practitioner.
Medical Rescue Training
Students that are enrolled in the Diploma in Emergency Medical Care programme register for rescue modules related to motor vehicle rescue, fire search and rescue and rope related (high-angle) rescue.
Students who enrol in the Bachelor of Emergency Medical Care complete the above-mentioned components as well as aquatic, urban, rural, hazardous material and wilderness related search and rescue.
Clinical Learning
Clinical learning shifts form a part of the module “Clinical Practice” for which students must register for the duration of all undergraduate programmes. Clinical learning is a core subject that bridges the gap between theoretical principles, practical skills, and clinical scenarios.
The UJ has a number of relevant clinical partners with whom students are placed for their clinical learning shifts. During these shifts, students are given the opportunity to engage with patients in a real clinical setting whilst under clinical supervision.
Students are required to complete a number of clinical hours, see a number of patients and complete a number of skills, relevant to their year of study, in order to move through the programmes.
Students also work with the clinical facilitators from their campus in a clinical setting, where the clinical facilitators engage in clinical teaching at the bedside.
