University Of Cape Town Industrial Psychology, The department prides itself on a history of producing high-quality and socially relevant psychological research, dating back to its foundation in 1920. It continues this tradition by producing research which is published and presented in both national and international journals and conferences.

Research is not something done only by postgraduate students and staff; all undergraduate students participate in research and engage in various research-oriented assignments as part of their normal coursework, and those students intending to major in psychology are given an extensive education in both quantitative and qualitative research design and data analysis.
The department specialises and publishes in the following fields: Developmental Psychology; Cognitive & Neuro-Psychology; Forensic Psychology; Psychological Trauma & Clinical Psychology; History of Psychology; Social Psychology; Discursive & Critical Psychology (including the Psychology of Difference and the Psychology of Gender).

Organisational Psychology

Organisational Psychology is an applied field of Psychology. The Organisational Psychology department is committed to improving people-management in South Africa. We teach and conduct research on how people behave at work, and we evaluate whether public and private-sector people-development programmes are working. We retain active links with workplaces and some staff members consult regularly to organisations.
A major in Organisational Psychology opens up a variety of employment opportunities: human resource management; training and development specialist; industrial relations manager are just some of the exciting career opportunities available to our gradautes.
Organisational Psychology courses and programmes are available to Humanities students through the Faculty of Commerce.

What We Do in Organisational Psychology

  • Educate and train Industrial Psychologists according to the statutory guidelines of our profession
  • Educate and train Programme Evaluators for Africa
  • Develop a strong academic section where all teaching staff have PhDs and produce the research outputs required for excellent scholarship

The Section of Organisational Psychology is renowned for its innovative programmes, excellent teaching, and attentive supervision of postgraduate students. This innovative programme combines the traditional knowledge areas of organisational psychology and human resource management into our under and postgraduate organisational psychology programmes.
Our teaching staff receive excellent ratings from students for instructional design and course delivery. Organisational Psychology and Programme Evaluation Master’s students complete their degrees within a single year of study.
