Master of Science (MSc) in Biomedical Engineering

Requirements: A four-year degree in Engineering or an Honours degree in Mathematical, Physical or Computer Sciences.
Format: The MSc is offered on a full-time basis only. Completion of the degree typically takes two years. Two streams are offered: Stream 1 – Degree on the basis of a dissertation (code: MM054HUB05), and Stream 2 – Degree based on coursework and minor dissertation (code: MM055HUB05). For Stream 1, coursework to be taken during the first year is regarded as preparation for the dissertation. For Stream 2, more extensive coursework is required during the first year and contributes to the overall mark.
The topic for the dissertation is chosen by the student, in consultation with a supervisor. The student will be required to provide regular written progress reports and oral presentations. Certain dissertation topics may be offered as a full dissertation only (Stream 1).

Courses Offered

The courses listed below are offered as part of the Biomedical Engineering programme. Certain courses may not be offered if student numbers are too low, and some courses are not offered every year. Course descriptions and rules for degrees are given in the Faculty of Health Sciences Postgraduate Handbook.

MSc Stream 1 (dissertation only): Students are required to complete the following pre-requisite courses in the first year, in preparation for the dissertation, and in order to be allowed to register for the second year: HUB2024F, HUB2026H, HUB4075W, and chosen by the student in conjunction with their supervisor and the academic coordinator two of the following: HUB4007F, HUB4045F, HUB5031F and HUB6009F. Students may however not receive credit for both HUB5031F and HUB6009F. Additional courses may be taken beyond the minimum requirements. Credit may be granted for equivalent courses completed elsewhere.
MSc Stream 2 (coursework and minor dissertation): Students are required to pass the following courses in the first year in order to be allowed to register for the second year: HUB2024F, HUB2026H, HUB4007F, HUB4045F, HUB4075W, HUB5028W, HUB6009F and HUB6010S. Students may be required by their supervisor and the programme convener to take additional courses offered in the Faculties of Health Sciences or Engineering, in preparation for their dissertation. Students may also, if they wish, register for other courses in the Department or in the institution, or participate in Honours modules in anatomy or physiology, in consultation with the programme coordinator and with the approval of the Head of Department.
PhD: Students may be asked to complete one or more courses as a foundation to their research work.
