UNISA Short Course in Intensive English for Foreign Language Speakers Upper Intermediate
The purpose of this module to establish communicative ability in English for speakers of foreign (non-South African) languages at the upper intermediate level.
Non-English speakers.
Students should have completed the intermediate module or passed level 2
0f the placement tests.
Students should have completed the intermediate module or attained a score relevant to level 3 in the placement test.

Contact classes
Qualified teaching staff of the Department of English Studies will act as assessors in a manner that complies with the quality management system of the Centre and University.
- Vocabulary: develop an active and passive vocabulary of 2300 words
- Reading: sentences and paragraphs, developing reading speed, extended texts, identifying and responding to key information, critical evaluation
- Range of texts: popular journalism, print advertisements, short stories, sustained fiction and non-fiction, poetry, drama, informative articles, video and audio
- Writing: writing with a purpose, the writing process, reconstructing writing
- Sentence level grammar: SVOC and SVOA sentence structure, complex and compound sentences, concord, sub-ordinate clauses, active and passive, perfect tenses
- Language use: intermediate contextual language use, fluent communicative ability in various, unmediated contexts
