UL Honours Psychology

UL Honours Psychology, Psychology is the science that studies behavior and mental processes. It involves the scientific investigation of how people think, feel and behave. Psychology has the rare distinction of being both an academic discipline and a profession. It is one of the few disciplines that can be applied in every context of human life.

It has relevance to those pursuing pure sciences, health sciences, the arts, commerce, law, engineering and many other fields of study. Students taking psychology have the privilege to study a wider range of topics that, among others, include learning and thinking, consciousness and perception, motivation and emotion, social behavior, personality and individuality, and stress and coping.

Our department offers a number of programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We strive in every way to produce the highest quality in the teaching of psychology and its research. Students enrolled in accredited professional psychology programmes can register in the relevant registration category with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). For example, a student enrolled in the BPsych programme can, on completion of his/her studies, register with the HPCSA as a registered counselor or psychometrist.

At Masters level, students can pursue professional psychology studies in any of the following programmes: clinical psychology, counseling psychology, educational psychology, industrial psychology, research psychology. For example, on completion of a Masters degree in clinical psychology, one can register with the HPCSA as a clinical psychologist. Currently, the Department of Psychology at the University of Limpopo (Turfloop Campus) offers professional training that leads to registration with HPCSA as a registered counselor (on completion of a BPsych degree) or as a clinical psychologist (on completion of a Masters degree in clinical psychology).
