UCT Wifi Password

To set up your connection to eduroam, you need to first secure your computer, then set it up to connect to eduroam and, finally, configure your web browser.

Step 1: Secure your computer

Before you connect to the UCT wireless service, your computer must comply with UCT Networking policies:

• Your device must have the latest operating system updates or patches.
• Your device must have an up-to-date anti-virus software program (e.g. McAfee – which is available at no cost to all UCT staff and students).

Failure to comply with these requirements puts you in violation of the Policy on unsecured computers at UCT – and you could lose access to the UCT network.

Step 2: Set up your eduroam connection in one of two ways

Automatically set up your computer using eduroam CAT

If your laptop can also connect via network cable, configure your web browser(s) for automatic proxy detection.

Manually set up your computer

Instructions are available for:

• Windows 10
• Windows 7 and 8 (quick version)
• Windows 7 and 8 (detailed steps)
• Older Windows versions

Windows 10

1. Ensure that your laptop’s Wi-Fi is switched on.
2. Select the Network icon in the notification area (bottom-right corner).
3. When the list of wireless connections appears, select eduroam and click Connect.
4. When prompted, log on with your UCT credentials:
   • Username: [email protected] (“username” is your student or staff number
   • Password: your UCT network password
5. Select Connect when prompted to Continue connecting.
6. Once you are successfully authenticated, the status will change to Connected. (Note that it may briefly display Limited before this.)

Your credentials should now be stored and you will only be prompted again when you change your UCT network password.

Windows 7 and 8 (quick version)

Connect to eduroam

1. Ensure that your laptop’s Wi-Fi is switched on.
2. Click  Network in your system tray.
3. When the list of wireless connections appears, select eduroam and click Connect.
4. When prompted, log on with your UCT credentials:
   • Username: [email protected] (“username” is your student or staff number)
   • Password: your UCT network password
     Note: You may be prompted to enter these credentials a few times.
5. Accept the certificates for the UCT authentication servers (uc-acs.uct.ac.za and mc-acs.uct.ac.za).
6. If your laptop can also connect via a network cable, configure your web browser(s) correctly.

Save your eduroam credentials to avoid future logins

After you first connect to eduroam, your credentials are not saved – so you will be asked to authenticate again each time you want to connect. To avoid this inconvenience, save your credentials by following this procedure.

1. Click  Network in your system tray.
2. When the list of wireless connections appears, right-click eduroam and select Properties.
3. In the properties dialog box:
   • Select Security.
   • Click Advanced settings.
4. In the Advanced settings dialog box:
   • Select 802.1X settings.
   • Ensure the Specify authentication mode check box is selected.
   • Choose User authentication from the drop-down list.
   • Click Save credentials.
5. In the Windows Security dialog box, enter your UCT credentials:
   • Username: [email protected] (“username” is your student or staff number)
   • Password: your UCT network password
   • Click OK.
6. Close the remaining dialog boxes by clicking OK.

WARNING:
When you change your network password, you will need to manually update the password in your eduroam settings. To do this, repeat steps 1-4. At step 4, you will see the Replace credentials button instead of the Save credentialsoption. Enter your new password and complete the remaining steps. To remove all users credentials proceed to step 4 and select the Delete credentials for all users check box.

Windows 7 and 8 (detailed version)

1. In the Start menu, search for and open Network and Sharing Center.
2. Select Set up a new connection or network.
3. In the Set up Up a Connection or Network dialog box:
   • Select Manually connect to a wireless network.
   • Click Next.
4. Enter these settings in the Manually connect to a wireless network dialog box:
   • Network name: eduroam
   • Security type: WPA2-Enterprise
   • Encryption type: AES
   • Click Next.
5. After confirmation that eduroam has been successfully added, click Change connection settings.
6. In the eduroam Wireless Network properties dialog box:
   • Select the Security tab.
   • Select Protected EAP (PEAP) from the Choose a network authentication method drop-down.
   • Click Settings.
7. Enter these setting in the Protected EAP Properties dialog box:
   • Connect to these servers: enabled
   • Connect to these servers: uc-acs.uct.ac.za;mc-acs.uct.ac.za
   • Trusted Root Certification Authorities: DigiCert Global Root CA
   • Select Authentication Method: Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)
   • Click Configure…
8. In the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties dialog box:
   • De-select Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any).
   • Click OK.
9. In the Protected EAP Properties dialog box, click OK.
10. In the Wireless network properties dialog box, click Advanced Settings.
11. In the Advanced Settings dialogue box:
    • Select Specify Authentication Mode.
    • Select User Authentication in the drop down menu.
    • Click OK.
12. Close the remaining dialog boxes and windows.
13. If you are prompted to authenticate to the UCT network, enter your credentials:
    • Username: [email protected] (“username” is your student or staff number)
    • Password: your UCT network password
    • Click OK.
14. To avoid future logins, save your eduroam credentials.
15. If your laptop can also connect via a network cable, configure your web browser(s) correctly.

Step 3: Configure your web browser(s) correctly

 

Warning: Using your laptop with 3G or other wireless services

After setting up and saving your eduroam connection, eduroam will allocate an IP address to your device. If you then connect your laptop to a different service that controls your wireless connectivity (e.g. a cellular 3G connection), you may experience issues with eduroam. If this happens, seek assistance from ICTS.
