Tembaletu was founded as a school for “differently abled” children. In 1974 a small group of woman were concerned by the great need for a school that could cater for Xhosa speaking children with physical disabilities in the Cape townships.
How can you support?
Tembaletu is always in need of support in terms of finances, donations and even assistance! Any contribution of time, talents or resources is always appreciated and goes a long way in the lives of some very special learners!
We have an ever growing ‘Wishlist’ of ideas and dreams for our learners and often need support in realizing some of these dreams. Below are just a few of the needs we have to overcome the challenges we face:
Big financial concerns:
– Transport (It takes a lot to maintain and run the buses we need in order to offer schooling to children from across the various Cape Town townships)
– Salaries (at this stage we do not have the funds to employ much needed assistants in the classes)
– Technology (we have an ever growing need for more and more technology in the school to offer quality access to learning for children with severe physical and/or learning difficulties, without technology, these learners have no way of independently accessing their school work like their more able bodied peers), our current technology also needs regular maintenance and upgrades.
How you can help?
– Donations
– Fundraising support
– Get a ‘Woolworths MySchool Supporter Card’ to swipe every time you shop at participating stores (its free and you can apply here https://www.myschool.co.za/supporter/apply/ we are registered as TEMBALETU School – Physically Disabled
– Sign up to buy Casual Day sticker/s from us every September
– Ask for our wishlist and donate a specific item of your choice
If you cant contribute financially there are many other opportunities:
– Donate your time as a volunteer… we need support in the classrooms, during sport and therapy time, in the grounds and buildings, and we could always use help with developing learning materials, posters, games, worksheets and more…
– Donate new or second hand items in good condition such as: educational resources, books, toys, puzzles, games, sporting equipment, etc.
– Donate items new/used items such as school clothes (grey pants, white shirts, shoes, socks, school bags and black jerseys) to support those learners from impoverished backgrounds, winter jackets are also welcome.
– Donate blankets to help keep the children warm in class in winter (this will help us ‘go green’ and save our heating bill every winter)
