Stellenbosch University- Knowledge Management Course, We offer Southern and Eastern African students, postgraduate programmes aimed at developing management insight and skills based on an understanding of how the dynamics of knowledge and information technologies permeates and shapes the life of organisations.

The coursework is contained in the KISM (Postgraduate Diploma in Knowledge and Information Systems Management), giving access to the MIKM (MPhil in Information and Knowledge Management), a research masters programme consisting of a thesis only. The primary purpose of the KISM is to provide working professionals with a grounding in the field of Knowledge and Information Systems Management and the theories, praxis and research methods employed in the field. The secondary purpose is to lay the foundations for Masters research in the field of Information and Knowledge Management.

The KISM is designed for fully employed and therefore part-time students. For that reason the programme extends over two academic years. Lecturing takes place in a face-to-face setting during intensive contact sessions. From these sessions flow assignments that students complete at home and submit electronically. This part-time nature makes it possible to set assignments that interface theory with the organizational context. Whilst specific dates vary depending on year of enrollment, February and July are  usually planned for the compulsary face-to-face contact.

The focus is the management of organisations primarily viewed through the lens of knowledge and information flows and the associated technologies that mediate such flows. This distinguishes the KISM and MIKM from other management programmes (e.g. the MBA) that view organisations through the lens of finance. Unlike most other management programs, the KISM and MIKM are focused on understanding the dynamics of organisational knowledge. According to the view taken in our programmes, knowledge is not merely one of the resources of an organisation, it is the basis for organisations’ capability to use their resources productively and to navigate future changes successfully.
