Saidi – The Southern African Institute of Driving Instructors – National

SAIDI was established in 1975 under the auspices of the National Road Safety Council, Traffic Safety, in order to place driver training on a co-ordinated basis and to professionalize and standardize the industry.

Since the inception, great strides forward have been made, and SAIDI is recognized by such bodies as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the Provincial Authorities, the Institute for Advanced Motorists of South Africa (IAM), the Automobile Association (AA) and the Department of Transport.

• Road carnage in South Africa is astronomical due to the low standard of driver training, poor law-enforcement, misuse of alcohol and drugs, poor road engineering and bad attitudes.

COVID -19 SAIDI POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

Covid 19; Southern African Institute of Driving Instructors’ policies and procedures during driver licence training:

1. All occupational health and safety legislation and guidelines as prescribed by the Disaster Management Act, as amended shall be applicable, including but not limited to the policies and guidelines published by Minister of Health and Labour.
2. SAIDI is working hard to assist driving instructors to ensure their safety and that of their clients.  
3. The pandemic is still rife and claiming many cases, fatalities and is still a very serious threat.
4. Practicing social distancing and adherence to sound hygiene principles is of utmost importance
5. The following must be adhered to :

1. a 3 layer face mask made of cloth, which covers the nose and mouth must be worn at all times by both student and instructor
2. Coughing must be done into the elbow while wearing a face mask.
3. Sanitizing, with a solution with a base of alcohol of 70%, must be available in the driving schools motor vehicle and must be used before and after each session.
4. Sanitizing of vehicles on all touch points, such as door handles, steering wheel, seat adjustment levers, gear levers, parking brakes (handbrakes), rear view mirror frames, side mirror adjustment controls, indicator arms, dashboard, cubbyhole handles, and any other place which might be touched during driving lessons etc, must be done before and after each session.

6. The driving school/instructor will keep a up to date signed attendance report for each training session and student trained.
7. NOTE: Forced air circulation MUST NOT BE USED during training sessions. i.e air conditioner and air circulation fans must be switched off. Lower the window if required to circulate air.
8. Should a client or driving instructor show any of the following symptoms, the lesson must immediately be stopped and medical assistance obtained: fever,cough, sore throat, redness of eyes or shortness of breath (or difficulty breathing). body aches, loss of smell or taste, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, weakness, tiredness
