Nursing in Education and Management
Purpose Statement
The main purpose of the programme is to be on the forefront of the discipline by developing and strengthening the knowledge base for Nursing practice through research, by providing excellence in the quality of the Department’s programmes both undergraduate and post graduate, through its teaching and by providing leadership for the discipline through its academic staff and graduates.
The Department of Nursing believes that individuals are unique holistic beings who must be supported in the maintenance of wellness, require care during periods of illness, and deserve dignity in their approach to death. The Department further believes that individuals are unique holistic beings who must engaged in continuing dynamic interaction at any time, the system of interest may be individual, the family, a group, the community or society who interact with the environment resulting in either positive or negative responses. Negative responses lead to ill health.
The Department believes that Nursing encompasses empirical aesthetic, ethical knowledge and therapeutic use of self. We believe that nursing research is an integral part of the curriculum and all programs study are strengthened by their proximity to the rich scholarly environment of the University.

With this qualification, learners will be qualified to be professional Nurses who hold qualifications generalist in nurse, community health, psychiatric nursing and midwifery. They are employable in Hospitals (public and private institutions).Placements include various places e.g. operating theatres, unit managers, midwifery, Community/Primary Healthcare Clinics, School nursing, industries, prisons and even overseas countries to name a few.
The graduates who are interested in teaching and managing Nursing can study for further postgraduate study, take up Management, Education positions in various sectors worldwide.

The programme is designed to suite graduates who wish to establish business in various fields in nursing and midwifery.

The programme is designed to allow for students who wish to proceed to post basic degree such as postgraduate degrees in management and education, degree masters and doctorate.It also caters for studies in various postgraduate advanced diplomas such as primary health care, occupational health, advanced midwifery & neonatal science, orthopaedics, to name a few.
