Northern Cape College of Emergency Care is dedicated to improving the health, safety and quality of life of all South Africans through the provision of First Aid and Community Health training, Eye Care and various community projects.

Northern Cape College of Emergency Care Services

Active in South Africa for over 130 years, St John offers a range of services including:

First Aid training
• First Aid kits
• Community Health training
• Eye tests and the provision of spectacles
• A national youth development programme (9-18 years)
• A national volunteer programme (adult)
• First Aid services at public and community events
• Hospital transfers

Northern Cape College of Emergency Care Programmes

  • Diploma in Emergency Medical Care
  • Diploma in Nursing
  • Diploma in Operating Department Assistance
  • Higher Certificate in Auxiliary Nursing
  • Certificate in Enrolled Nursing. (NB- Certificate in Enrolled Nursing was discontinued by the South African Nursing Council SANC until further notice. Please visit the Mediclinic website from time to time, for the accreditation of the new nursing qualifications.)

Requirement for Diploma in Emergency Medical Care:

Grade 12 with admission to a Diploma or equivalent with an average of 50% and in the case of a Vocational National certificate an average of 50% is required. If you are currently in Grade 11, submit your year end results for Grade 11. Candidates with relevant EMS experience can apply for RPL.

National senior certificate
• Physical science – NQF Level 4 with minimum of 40%
• Mathematics – NQF Level 4 with minimum of 40% or
• English communication skills – NQF Level 4 with minimum of 40%
• South African citizenship

National Vocational certificate
• Physical science – NQF Level 4 with a minimum of 50%
• Mathematics – NQF Level 4 with a minimum of 50% or
• English communication skills – NQF Level 4 with a minimum of 50%
• South African citizenship

Recognition of Prior Learning minimum requirements
• Grade 12 with an aggregate of 950 marks and above
• Be 25 years and older
• Be registered Ambulance Emergency Assistant (AEA) with the HPCSA
• Have a minimum of 5 years operational experience
• Be currently employed by an Emergency Medical Services

Requirements for Diploma in Operating Department Assistance:

Grade 12 with admission to higher certificate or equivalent with an average of 50%; Old certificate: D-aggregate (950 marks).
If you are currently in Grade 11, submit your year-end results for Grade 11.

National Senior certificate
 Any science subject – NQF Level 4 with minimum of 40% (e.g. Life Science, physical science and biology)
• Mathematics – NQF Level 4 with minimum of 40% or
• Mathematics Literacy – NQF Level 4 with a minimum of 50%
• English communication skills – NQF Level 4 with minimum of 40%
• South African citizenship
