Mafikeng Campus history

A tribute to the people of the North-West Province
The Mafikeng Campus has proud roots in the province and close ties with its people. In the period from the late 1960s to the early 1970s, the people of the North-West Province took the initiative and raised the sum of R100 000 as a contribution to the establishment of their own university.
Initially, their institution was known as the University of Bophuthatswana. Then, after the democratic change that took place in South Africa in 1994, the university community voted by popular ballot to change the name to University of the North-West.
Finally, in 2004 – exactly a decade after the advent of democracy in our country – the university became the Mafikeng Campus of the newly created North-West University.
Since the merger, the Campus has benefited from significant investment in its academic and student infrastructure. New student residences have been constructed, as have new Animal Health facilities, computer laboratories and laboratories for the Centre for Applied Radiation Science and Technology, amongst others.
Access roads, parking facilities and security at the Campus have also been dramatically improved through an intensive macro maintenance programme funded by the NWU and the Department of Education’s Merger Fund.
Today, the Mafikeng Campus is the second-largest NWU campus and it is the alma mater of numerous top Southern African business and sports leaders.
