Magalies Special School opened its doors on October 5, 1954 with 135 learners and 8 staff members, but was then known as Gezina School.
Four years later the school moved from 10th Avenue in Gezina to a new building situated in 21st Avenue in Rietfontein. In 1962 the school had a total of 257 learners and was then known as Sonnestraal Special School.
In 1997 the school opened the new year with 662 learners. On September 8, 1999 it was decided to change the school’s name to Magalies Special School- in reference to the Magalies mountain range running through Pretoria.
There are currently a grand total of 646 learners enrolled at Magalies Special School. We are driven by our motto- Ambulate in lumine ( walk in the light)- and focus on developing and promoting good qualities and values in our learners.
