Matric Pass Requirements

There are three different NSC passes:

Higher Certificate Pass

  • A minimum of 40% for three subjects (of which one must be Home Language)
  • A minimum of 30% for a further three subjects. Learners may fail one subject (the seventh subject).
  • Even should the learner achieve 6 distinctions but fail the seventh subject, only a Higher Certificate Pass will be achieved.

With a Higher Certificate Pass you cannot study at a university/university of technology. If it is your dream to attend any of the institutions mentioned, you will have to attend bridging courses offered by accredited FET Colleges. This will allow you to upgrade your matric results in order to meet the minimum requirements needed for admission to the course of your choice. Boys with a Higher Certificate Pass can obtain a qualification from Chef Schools, Hotel Schools, IT Colleges and many more.

Diploma Pass

  • A minimum of 40% for four subjects (of which one must be home language)
  • A minimum of 30% for the other three subjects
  • You cannot fail any subject (below 30%)

With a Diploma Pass you can study at a university of technology, but not at a university. You can also upgrade your matric results by enrolling for (and passing) bridging courses. Universities of technology offer a wide variety of courses, especially of a more practical nature. In many cases employers regard practical experience as vital, and they might prefer graduates from the universities of technology.

Bachelor’s Pass

  • A minimum of 50% for four subjects
  • A minimum of 30% for the other three subjects
  • You cannot fail any subject (below 30%)

The Bachelor’s Pass is the best possible pass level that a learner can achieve. This will qualify you to study at any tertiary institution in South Africa, as long as you meet the requirements for that specific degree or diploma. A university degree lends extra credibility to your qualifications and proves that you could conceivably handle an additional workload, as a disciplined individual. Learners should always consider job opportunities before deciding on a specific degree or diploma.
