CPUT IT
CPUT IT, The Department of Information Technology offers a wide range of formal qualifications and non-formal courses in IT and related disciplines. The department offers specialized training in Information Technology in the areas of Applications Development (Software Development), Communication Networks and Multimedia Technology. The department supports a large graduate and postgraduate programme where the research is directed at both community and industry interests.
The department also offers a wide range of non-formal courses in collaboration with the IT industry. There are several semi-autonomous business units operating within the department. These units are focused on the professional development of undergraduate and graduate students in delivering research and development services to the community and industry.
The department continues to provide leadership in curriculum development to especially the University of Technology sector. In this regard the department also has a defining role in the Higher Education ICT Association (HEICTA) and within the Further Education and Training (FET) sector.

- Students must select 9 subjects including all of the compulsory subjects of the specialisation plus the optional subjects.
- Subjects from another specialisation option may be selected, but not the advanced subject of the other specialisation.

Students have access to a range of high-tech computer facilities located across CPUT’s campuses and service points.
Computer laboratories
CPUT offers students a range of computer laboratories where they can conduct research and complete their academic work. Computers in these laboratories feature the latest hardware and software and reserved laboratories cater for students who require specialised software as part of their studies.
Each computer laboratory is access-controlled, so students must have their student cards with them at all times. Each laboratory also has support staff on-hand to help where needed.
