HIGH SCHOOL

Christian Brothers’ College Boksburg High School is committed to the development of the whole person. Our policies, processes and approach to teaching and learning are there to facilitate Academic, Physical, Cultural and Spiritual growth in all who are part of our College family and where the presence of each individual is valued.

The Christian ethos of our school is reflected in our selection process which although involving an entrance examination, is structured to acknowledge a wide variety of abilities and talents. We take great pride in developing each of our students to their utmost potential.

We strive to be a progressive and caring environment in which foundations are laid and character is developed, enriching the lives of our boys and preparing them for the opportunities and adventures they will have as they develop into the “Men of Honour.”The men we expect them to be.

The school has a well-balanced academic and extra-mural and spiritual development programme, delivered by well-trained, motivated and experienced staff, with and understanding of the learning needs of the boys.

Our boys are exceptionally proud of C.B.C. and there is indeed a tremendous sense of community within the school. This is further enhanced by our unique House and Leadership system, through which a strong work ethic, self-worth, individual recognition and a sense of belonging is created.

JUNIOR PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Junior Primary School enters boys aged 4 in Year 000 and follows through to boys in Year 3. Bright, interactive classrooms and busy days characterise the Primary School. Class sizes vary with maximum numbers of 15 in Year 000, 20 in Year 00 and 25 in the other classes

Our qualified team of teachers follows the newly integrated Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) as set out by the Department of Education.
Careful attention has been paid to what is being taught in the classroom so that from Year 000 to Year 0 foundational concepts are built on each year. Our in house school programmes also include music, movement skills, perceptual skills, art, drama rings, computer skills as well as visits to our school media centre.

The pre-grade section has its own playground where these young boys are given every opportunity to develop socially and physically in a safe environment. Primary school boys enjoy the freedom of their section of the big field. Free play and break times are well supervised by teaching staff.

Our Pre-Primary and Primary section of the school is characterised by energetic activity, laughter, and learning. Here our boys are lovingly guided, and nurtured and encouraged by a motivated well qualified staff to achieve their potential. We thrive to instill lifelong values, manners and ethics, in our quest to create little C.B.C gentlemen.

Year 1 – 3 boys are exposed to the main learning areas: namely English, Mathematics, Afrikaans and Life Skills. Specialist teachers are employed for Music, Computers, Library, Physical Education, and Art. Each grade also attends design and technology lessons for one term a year. Boys attend an assembly once a week and each class is given an opportunity to lead the assembly.

Individual classes also have an opportunity to present an item of entertainment at these assemblies. All classes attend Liturgical singing preparation classes once a week and Liturgies are often held to celebrate important events on the Catholic Church calendar.

Extra mural activities comprising both sport and cultural activities are offered to Year 1 – 3 boys on a seasonal basis. These include art, life skills, cricket, ball skills, soccer, rugby, swimming, tennis and athletics.

SENIOR PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Senior Primary School learners (Year 4 – 7) experience an individual and personal environment where they are encouraged to develop a strong bond with their classmates.

The class size of 23 – 25 boys allows the quality staff to interact with the boys on a personal level.

Lessons are based on the CAPS system, as prescribed by the GDE, and are supplemented according to the needs and interests of the learners.

Assessment is cumulative-based and two sets of exams are written: in July and December.

The Year 6 and 7 learners also write external assessments to ensure they are working in accordance with the standards set in other Gauteng-based independent schools. Academic support in English, Afrikaans and Mathematics, as well as a Homework Supervision class, are offered in the afternoons.

Ten sports disciplines are offered to the boys, and these are: Cricket, Swimming, Tennis, Squash, Athletics, Soccer, Rugby, Hockey, Golf and Cross-country. Inter-House matches, as well as Inter-School matches, are played.

There are two Inter-CBC Festivals held each year, one in summer and one in winter. Boys belong to four different games houses and these are: Albion – Yellow, Caledonia – Blue, Hibernia -Green and Cambria – Red. Various Inter-House events are held for the various sporting disciplines.

Boys can choose from the following cultural activities: Marimbas, Pipe Band, Chess, Public Speaking, Enviro Club, Brainiacs, Debating and Computers. We participate in Inter-House and Inter-School events in these cultural activities.
All boys are expected to participate in at least one sport and one cultural activity each term.

An inclusive leadership structure for the Year 7 learners ensures that leadership and independence skills are nurtured within the secure environment of the school. The Leadership Structure includes portfolios in House and Class Leadership, Ethos, Terrain, Security and Media/ Communication, and the boys rotate through the portfolios during the year. Year 7 learners are also eligible for the unique, annual week-long CBC Leadership Exchange Programme.
