Cape Peninsula University Of Technology Industrial Design
Cape Peninsula University Of Technology Industrial Design, We are called Three-dimensional designers; Product designers and Industrial designers. Our graduates design anything and everything that is mass-produced – from BMWs to iPods; from couches to TVs. We turn good ideas into real products.
Our department is a vibrant and dynamic space where emphasis is always placed on our students and graduates to become designers who are conscious of the needs of communities around them. We provide the opportunity for our students to learn using state-of-the-art equipment and software. Our biggest resource however, is a team of dedicated lecturing staff who are experts in their respective fields and provide our students with a wealth of invaluable experience.
Where it fits in with our curriculum, we partner with industry to run projects with our students. The benefit for students is the “straight talking” response from industry. This approach enhances teaching and learning for both students and staff.
Some joint projects we have worked on include a Biomimicry and Design for Sustainability project, both focused within Cape Town’s East City known as ‘The Fringe’. Further, we are proud to say that we are very involved with Cape Town’s 2014 World Design Capital activities.

Industrial Design students shine at exhibition
In a first for the programme, final-year students were awarded prizes with irreverent titles like, Mad Scientist, Blood, Sweat and Tears and Minion to Master. The programme lecturers came up with the names for the prizes and also selected the ultimate winners.
Items such as standing lamps, furniture, timber puzzles and product renderings made for a dazzling display. Third-year National Diploma students weren’t the only ones exhibiting either. Postgraduate (BTech) students’ designs were also on display to the audience, which included students, alumni and industry players. Products designed by the BTech students were also available for sale – from coffee pots to camera straps.
The Product Design and Industrial Design Postgraduate courses are for anyone interested in designing in three dimensions – from physical objects found in daily life, to innovative systems and product concepts. The job opportunities available to graduates of this course include lighting design, set-building and furniture design and manufacturing.
The exhibition served as valuable experience for the student organisers in promoting and marketing their designs, a skill they will need to have when they enter the working world.
More pictures of the exhibition are available on our Facebook page.
