University Of The Witwatersrand International Office, The University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (Wits), is a leading research and postgraduate university in the commercial heart of Africa.
It aims to be the first port of call for all international students and provides a wide range of services including general enquiries from prospective students, immigration advice and advocacy, assistance with matric exemptions, advice on safety, and general advice about your stay at Wits.
To this extent, we seek to complement the services provided by faculties and departments and have strong relations with service providers within and outside of Wits.
In cooperation with the Strategic Partnerships Office (SPO), the International Students Office also facilitates the Semester Study Abroad Programme as well as other programmes creating opportunities for Wits students to study/conduct research at partner universities abroad.

Checklist
- Apply to Wits
- Sign and return Letter of Acceptance from the University to validate acceptance or accept offer on the Student Self Service Portal.
- Valid Passport
- Apply for Study Visa. (When collecting your Study Visa, check the date of issue and expiry. Ensure that the visa is issued for the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg or any of its variations
- Apply for South African Medical Aid Cover with a registered South African Medical Aid Provider until 31 December (Refer to Medical Aid section under “Applying to Wits”)
- Travel arrangements to South Africa
- Please carry a set of clothing in your hand luggage
- Arrange for funds for fees and living expenses
- Arrange for shuttle transfer to Wits University or place of residence
- Undergraduate students should bring their Original School Leaving Certificates and /or Tertiary Qualifications for Matriculation Exemption

International students
Before International students are able to register you must complete the following steps:
STEP 1:
Complete the Online Fees Estimator for the annual tuition fees, other related costs and the on-campus accommodation fee (if applicable).
STEP 2:
Valid VISA
Full-time: Study visa – this reflects that you will be studying at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.
Part-time: Critical/General Work Visa/Intra-Company or Business Visa
Holders of Refugee Permits, Asylum Seeker Permits and Diplomatic Visas can visit the International Students Office website for requirements.
STEP 3:
Payment of fees:
- 75% of the annual tuition fee is payable on or before registration, as well as 75% of the on-campus accommodation fee.
- This payment includes the annual tuition fees and other related costs.
- The balance of the fees is payable by 31 March.
- Postgraduate students registering in the course of the year; the balance is payable 30 days after registration.
- Fees clearance is to be obtained from the Fees Office.
- If you are sponsored, your sponsorship letter has to be vetted by the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office(FASO).
STEP 4:
Clearance to Register:
- Present your Passport, Visa (study, work) and proof of SA medical aid membership for the current year to the International Students Office to obtain the international clearance to enroll.
- First time undergraduate students must obtain a Matriculation Exemption.
