Purpose

The purpose of this Short Learning programme is to facilitate the development of the key skills required to develop knowledge with regards to the identification and management of substance-related disorders within the African and global context.
 
Identification and Management of Substance Related Disorders short course addresses the problems of substance-related disorders across the spectrum, including the latest thinking about awareness, prevention and intervention. It provides an understanding of the origins and current status of substance-related disorders, and includes epidemiological information related to the South African and international context. The course also covers substance-related disorder diagnostic criteria for the subcategories, intervention, and rehabilitation and recovery.
 
This short course draws on your existing knowledge and experience, based on the principles of experiential learning, which works from the premise that all skills have both a theoretical and practical foundation. The aim of this process is to develop a skill set relevant to a student context.

Coordinators of social programmes may benefit from this course, healthcare workers and managers, mental health professionals, individuals in the community or professional capacity (e.g. as a nurse, doctor, social worker, psychologist, counsellor, community or volunteer worker, religious worker), or a personal capacity (as a parent, family member or neighbor).
 
 

Admission requirements
  • Learners must demonstrate the following:
  • Communicative competence in the medium of instruction
  • The ability to learn from predominantly written material in English
  • The ability to present and communicate information and opinions in English in well-structured arguments, with limited support from lecturers
