Notes:

• Where tuition fees are levied for a study programme as a whole, the full fee is payable in the first year of registration, even when registration takes place late in the year.
• No interruption may occur in a postgraduate student’s registration for a research-orientated postgraduate study programme. Should a student interrupt his/her studies, such a student will, on re-registration, be liable for the full fees applicable to the degree or postgraduate diploma programme.
• Postgraduate students failing to renew their registration annually are regarded as having had an interruption in their studies.
• Students can apply for a “gap year” within their Faculty by obtaining the Dean of that Faculty’s approval. However, take note that the annual registration fees will still be applicable for the gap year, to ensure that no interruption is recorded.

International levy

• The international levy for 2018 is R3130.
• This international levy is payable annually by all non-South African citizens who have Study Visas or Visitors Visas that are endorsed to allow study, including students who are citizens of SADC countries on these visas. This amount is payable in addition to the registration fee.
• Asylum seekers, refugees and diplomats stationed in South Africa, as well as permanent residents of South Africa only, are exempted from paying the international levy. See the table for the various fee factors.

International registration and tuition fees

• From 2016 international students will be required:
  • to pay a initial registration fee (which will form part of the total tuition fees due), before registration (see amounts in table below).
  •  to pay 50% of their full student account by 30 April, and the remainder by 31 July.
• Non-South African citizens (excluding students who are citizens of SADC countries) will be charged double the tuition fee of South African students (see cost factors in the table below), AND the International levy will be charged. (Except for full research master’s or doctoral degrees, where only the local tuition fee will be required.)
• Students who are citizens of SADC countries will pay the same tuition fee as charged for South African citizens BUT also have to pay the international levy.
• Asylum seekers, refugees and diplomats stationed in South Africa, as well as permanent residents of South Africa only, are exempted from paying double tuition fees and are exempted from the international levy.

 
SADC countries
The SADC countries include Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
 
International payments can be made using a credit card (provided you have 3D security in place with your own bank), or by doing a SWIFT transfer from your bank in your own country.

Medical aid for international students
 
Please note, that DHA does NOT accept any outside medical cover anymore. Including the ones that have always been accepted: (PULA, Swazimed, Bomaid, Namibhealth etc. etc.) since last year according to International Education Association Of South Africa (IEASA).
 
All non-South African citizens, including students who are citizens from SADC countries, need to comply with the visa regulation as determined by the Immigration Act, Act 19 of 2004.
Regulation 10(1) (i) determines the following:
An applicant for a study visa is required to provide proof of medical aid cover with a medical scheme registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act, Act 131 of 1998, recognised in the Republic.

The University requires that the medical aid cover be valid for the full academic year for which you seek registration until 31 December.
Study Abroad and Exchange Students must secure medical cover for the duration of their stay.  A minimum of six (6) months’ cover is provided by medical companies.  This provision is for Study Abroad and Exchange students only.
Month-to-month medical aid cover will only be acceptable from dependents on submission of the confirmation letter from the main member’s medical aid service provider.
Should students rely on sponsorships, they should ensure that the sponsor is advised of this requirement at the onset of the sponsorship of the admission offer from the University.  UP does not accept sponsorship letters in lieu of payment.  Payment of the required medical aid cover fee is made directly to the medical aid service provider, prior to immigration clearance for registration.
The medical service providers stated below are medical aid companies with developed student-focused products that are registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act.  These companies offer the minimum benefits that a student may require while in South Africa.
Take note:  Although you may, with another international insurance or medical product, secure a study visa from a South African visa issuing authority, the University of Pretoria, in accordance with the Immigration Act, does not recognise such medical cover for registration purposes.
Momentum Health offers weekly consultation sessions on the Hatfield Campus, International Students Division offices, Client Service Centre.  Students can join both schemes online.

Tuition fees per faculty

ALL POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS

• Fees for the next study year are normally available as from December.  Quotations will be available (before the new fees are known) with the current year’s fees.  Please see the information at the bottom of this page or the Quotation icon.
• The Fees paid by bursaries icon has information for students studying with a bursary.
• There is no distinction in tuition fees between part-time and full-time studies.

 
RESEARCH MASTERS and DOCTORATES
Registrations for research Masters and Doctorates will be levied an annual tuition fee, subject to a
possible annual increase and will be payable for each year of registration.
 
HONOURS and MASTERS BY COURSEWORK
Registrations for Honours and Masters by coursework degrees will be levied as per the tables per
faculty, provided that the student completes the degree in the prescribed period.
NOT COMPLETED DEGREE WITHIN PRESCRIBED PERIOD
Should a masters by research or doctoral degree not be completed in the prescribed period, the
new annual fee structure applicable at that point in time will be applicable for any subsequent years
of re-registration that are allowed.
Where a final hard copy of the thesis in the case of doctoral studies; a dissertation in the case of
Masters by Research studies and a mini-dissertation in the case of Masters by Coursework studies is
submitted to the Student Administration Office of the respective faculty by 15 February, the faculty
should liaise with the finance department to have the fees adjusted. Any student who did not submit
the final copy of the thesis/dissertation/mini-dissertation by 15 February will have to register again.
If the final hard copy of the thesis in the case of doctoral studies; a dissertation in the case of
Masters by Research studies and a mini-dissertation in the case of Masters by Coursework studies is
submitted to the Student Administration Office of the respective faculty by 31 March, a student will
have to re-register and an administration fee (determined on an annual basis) will be levied. If the
final hard copy of the thesis in the case of doctoral studies; a dissertation in the case of Masters by
Research studies and a mini-dissertation in the case of Masters by Coursework studies is not
submitted to the Student Administration Office of the respective faculty by 31 March a student will
have to re-register and tuition fees will be levied accordingly.
Should a one-year master’s degree not be completed in one year, the annual fee applicable for that
master’s degree will be charged annually from the second year onwards.
INTERRUPTION/LEAVE OF ABSENCE DURING STUDIES
No interruption may occur in a postgraduate student’s registration for a postgraduate study
programme. The student has to register every year even if they require a leave of absence for that
year. For students who are in exceptional cases granted a period of leave of absence, will be levied
only the annual initial registration fee for the year they are absent and will on their return be subject
to the new annual tuition fee structure applicable for the year at that point in time.

• Once a student has registered his/her personal and own specific student account details, as well as information on possible rebates, can be found on the UP Student Portal (“Student Centre”).
• If you are a first-time user of the UP Student Portal, go to http://www.up.ac.za/portal; click on “New User” and enter your student number as username. Type in your ID/passport number and click on “Proceed”.
• Average fees for the various programmes in the faculties are set out in the tables on the following pages and are based on the average cost of the study programmes.
• Note that the fees for some study programmes may differ from those specified in the table on the following pages.
• Fees do not include the cost of prescribed books, stationery, research costs or other study-related expenses.
• University fees are payable in advance, however, it is permissible to pay your fees in three instalments, viz.:

• The initial fee or re-registration fee is payable prior to registration.
• Half (50%) of the student’s full account is payable before or on 30 April
• The full (100%) amount of the student’s account is payable before or on 31 July.

• On discontinuation of studies, all outstanding fees become due immediately.  See the Discontinuation icon for discontinuation dates and how to discontinue.
• If a degree is completed mid-year, AND the student registers for a new degree in the same year, the FULL tuition fees are immediately payable on registration. Fees are fully payable by end of July of any study year, irrespective of when in the year the student registered for the programme.
• Tuition fees are levied for the study programme as a whole or per individual subject course. The latter applies to coursework-based study programmes.
• Tuition fees for subject course/modules taken in addition to the standard study programme are levied in addition to the tuition fees.
• In the following tables “p.s.” indicates the tuition fees that are levied per individual subject/module/course. An estimate of the total fee for the study programme provided on the following pages.

Should students rely on sponsorships, they should ensure that the sponsor is advised of this requirement at the onset of the sponsorship of the admission offer from the University.  UP does not accept sponsorship letters in lieu of payment.  Payment of the required medical aid cover fee is made directly to the medical aid service provider, prior to immigration clearance for registration.
The medical service providers stated below are medical aid companies with developed student-focused products that are registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act.  These companies offer the minimum benefits that a student may require while in South Africa.
Take note:  Although you may, with another international insurance or medical product, secure a study visa from a South African visa issuing authority, the University of Pretoria, in accordance with the Immigration Act, does not recognise such medical cover for registration purposes.
