Stellenbosch University International Students, They came from all over the world starting the year as Matie students. About 300 international students from countries as far as Romania, Czech Republic, Benin, Madagascar, Slovenia, Russia, Rwanda and Poland attended a three-day long Welcome and Orientation programme hosted by the Postgraduate and International Office (PGIO).

Hosted from 19-21 January 2016, new international students were introduced to life at Stellenbosch University (SU), getting information about campus life, facilities, services and events. 

“Be flexible, navigate your way around campus and enjoy it here,” Robert Kotzé, Senior Director of the PGIO, welcomed students during the opening session of the programme.

“Don’t expect it to be the same as back home. It won’t be the same. You are in a new country, at a new institution,” he told the students who enrolled at Stellenbosch University (SU) for non- and full-degree programmes.

“My challenge to you is to be open to the Matie experience. Connect to South Africans, the people around you.”

Highlighting SU’s research, academic and sports achievements, Kotze told students they are at an excellent institution where academics are high on the agenda.

In attendance was German-born Leila Wandelt, a student at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. Leila will spend a semester at SU said friends told her SU is a great university. Here for the next six months she is enrolled for business management course.

Anton Avertoft from Jönköping University in Sweden said he looked forward to his time at SU and would like to explore what the country has to offer. “South Africa is a beautiful country and the experience will be interesting.”

Chan Hey Man, a student from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, said he would like to learn more about urban planning and design. Here for six months, he will attend classes in Photography and Afrikaans.

Mauritian student Sanjana Gunasee enrolled for her PhD in Chemical Engineering. The postgraduate student said she chose Stellenbosch University because her supervisor is here. 

Stellenbosch University has more than 4000 international students representing 122 nationalities.
